The 20th anniversary of the National Award-winning film Parineeta, produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and directed by Pradeep Sarkar, was celebrated with a grand re-release event on Monday, August 19, 2025. Despite heavy monsoon rains, lead actress Vidya Balan, whose critically acclaimed debut Parineeta was, stepped out alongside a host of Bollywood celebrities including Rekha, Dia Mirza, Shreya Ghoshal, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, and Rajkumar Hirani.
A poignant highlight of the evening was Vidya Balan's heartfelt tribute to veteran actress Rekha, where she was seen touching Rekha's feet and kissing her hand on the red carpet, a moment that quickly went viral and won hearts online. Parineeta, released on June 10, 2005, completed 20 years last month and is now re-releasing to commemorate this milestone. The romantic drama, a Hindi adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's 1914 Bengali novella, also featured Sanjay Dutt and Saif Ali Khan. It is remembered for its soulful score by Shantanu Moitra and its poignant exploration of patriarchy, class divide, and a woman's quiet rebellion. The film is set for re-release in select theatres across India on August 29. This event also marked 20 years of Vidya Balan's illustrious career and 50 years of Vinod Chopra Films.
