Desk Correspondent , Dispur - In a significant move marking the transition to a new administrative term, Himanta Biswa Sarma officially stepped down as the Chief Minister of Assam on Wednesday. This resignation follows a historic third consecutive mandate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the state. Sarma visited the Raj Bhavan in Guwahati to submit his formal resignation, along with that of his Council of Ministers, to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya. The Governor accepted the resignation and requested Sarma to continue serving as the caretaker Chief Minister until the formal installation of the next government. This procedural step was initiated immediately after the formal notification of the election results, ensuring that the constitutional process for government formation remains on track.
The development comes on the heels of a landslide victory for the saffron party, which secured 82 seats in the 126-member Assembly, comfortably surpassing the majority mark and consolidating its dominance in Northeast India. The next phase of the transition will involve a crucial meeting of the BJP Legislature Party, where members will formally elect their leader. According to official sources from the Chief Minister’s Office, the high-profile swearing-in ceremony is tentatively scheduled for May 12 in Guwahati. Senior national leaders from the BJP are expected to attend the event, which highlights the party’s strengthening grip on the state and reflects the public's continued confidence in its governance and developmental agenda over the past decade.
Beyond the administrative formalities, Sarma characterized the election results as a "historic blessing" and a validation of the party's work regarding regional stability and infrastructure. Following his resignation, he visited the RSS headquarters in Guwahati to meet with local supporters and volunteers, underscoring the grassroots connection that fueled the campaign. Meanwhile, the opposition faces a significant setback as the NDA’s victory cross the three-fourths majority mark when including alliance partners. As the state prepares for the oath-taking ceremony next week, the political atmosphere in Guwahati remains celebratory, with the new administration expected to prioritize its unfinished development projects and further strengthen the state’s economic position within the national framework.
