Sarma visited the Raj Bhavan in Guwahati to submit his formal resignation, along with that of his Council of Ministers, to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya. The Governor accepted the resignation and requested Sarma to continue serving as the caretaker Chief Minister until the formal installation of the next government.
