Mumbai
Heavy monsoon rains have brought Mumbai to a standstill for a second consecutive day on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, prompting a red alert for extreme rainfall. The financial capital recorded nearly 300 mm of rain in 24 hours, with areas like Vikhroli seeing 255.5 mm.
The downpour caused widespread disruption to transport. Over 200 passengers were evacuated from a stranded Monorail train near Bhakti Park. Mumbai Airport saw eight flights rerouted and hundreds delayed, with ten cancellations. Suburban train services were severely affected, with tracks submerged and Central Railway cancelling 14 long-distance trains.
Extensive waterlogging was reported across the city, including Sion, Dadar, and Andheri subway, which was closed for hours. The Mithi river crossed its danger mark, leading to the evacuation of 350-500 people from Kranti Nagar. Tragically, seven people have died across Maharashtra due to rain-related incidents. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday for government offices and schools, urging private firms to enable work-from-home. Authorities warn the next 48 hours remain critical for Mumbai and neighbouring districts.
