Ranit Kr. Singh , Kolkata — A massive cache of essential government and personal identification documents was recovered from outside a tea shop near the Namkhana Toll Plaza in South 24 Parganas on Wednesday evening, triggering major local unrest. Acting on a tip-off from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers and supporters, local police rushed to the scene and seized the abandoned documents. The unexpected recovery of such highly sensitive documents in a public commercial space has raised serious security concerns and created a significant stir throughout the neighborhood.
According to senior police officials, the recovered stash includes more than 30 Aadhaar cards, 9 voter identity cards, 38 Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) bonds, 26 automated teller machine (ATM) cards, and multiple savings account passbooks belonging to various commercial banks. Authorities have officially taken the entire bulk of documents into legal custody to safeguard the citizens' personal data. Investigators are currently reviewing the logistical tracking of these items to determine how such an extensive volume of confidential identity credentials accumulated unnoticed at a roadside tea stall.
A comprehensive investigation is underway, with the local police prioritizing the verification of the authenticity of the seized items to ensure they are not counterfeit or duplicate copies. Investigating officers have also begun tracing and contacting the individuals whose names are listed on the recovered identification materials. Authorities hope that speaking with the cardholders will clarify the exact circumstances under which they separated from their documents, as well as reveal whether any fraudulent activity or localized voter suppression tactics were involved.
