Ananya Lohia , Mumbai - The Maharashtra government has recommended the withdrawal of 44 police cases registered in connection with various festivals, religious, social movements and political agitations across the state. The decision was taken by a cabinet sub-committee tasked with reviewing such cases and providing relief to participants involved in public movements and celebrations.
The committee, headed by Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar, reviewed 133 applications during a meeting at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai. The cases recommended for withdrawal include those linked to Ganesh festival, Navratri and Dahi Handi celebrations, as well as cattle protection and labour agitations. Shelar said the government has a responsibility to provide relief to social activists, political party workers, protesters and participants in ideological movements who may have faced unnecessary legal action while taking part in such activities. The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Law and Judiciary Department, the Home Department, the Directorate of Public Prosecution and senior police officers from across the state.
According to an official statement, the committee had earlier recommended the withdrawal of 77 cases. With the latest recommendation of 44 cases, the total number of cases proposed for withdrawal has now reached 121. Of the 133 applications reviewed, 14 cases were sent for reconsideration and will be placed before regional committees headed by deputy commissioners of police. The committee also noted that 35 cases had already been disposed of, while 32 others were found to be outside its jurisdiction. The panel clarified that offences involving crimes against women, serious criminal offences, and personal or civil disputes cannot be considered for withdrawal under the government's policy.
It further stated that cases involving sitting and former MPs and MLAs can be finally decided only by the Bombay High Court, in line with Supreme Court directions and existing government resolutions. Eight cases remain pending consideration, while the review process is set to continue as the government examines applications seeking withdrawal of cases linked to political, social and cultural activities across Maharashtra.
Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) is facing a critical political crisis following intense speculation that six or seven of its nine Lok Sabha Members of Parliament (MPs) are planning to defect to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's rival faction.
