Ananya Lohia , Kolkata -In a major boost to Kolkata's public transport system, the West Bengal government has announced plans to bring back air-conditioned trams and expand the city's historic tram network with new routes.
Transport Minister Arjun Singh said the proposed expansion will include New Town and could eventually connect the iconic Dakshineswar Kali Temple and Kalighat Kali Temple, creating a modern transit link between two of the city's most significant landmarks. The minister said RITES Limited has been entrusted with conducting a survey for the tram expansion project.
The move marks the return of air-conditioned trams more than a decade after they were first introduced and later discontinued. Alongside the tram revival, the state government also announced plans to induct more air-conditioned electric and CNG buses, build an extensive EV charging network, and explore inland waterways and a port along the Ganges to strengthen West Bengal's transport infrastructure.
Calling for improved logistics to drive industrial growth, the government said it is committed to faster decision-making and infrastructure development, signalling a major push to modernise transport across the state.
