Jammu, August 26 – Heavy rainfall has caused widespread flooding and infrastructure damage in the Jammu region, resulting in at least nine deaths and the collapse of multiple bridges, including a major one on the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway.
Rivers such as the Tawi and Chenab are flowing above danger levels, prompting authorities to issue red and orange alerts for flash floods and landslides in districts including Doda, Kishtwar, Rajouri, and Reasi. The Indian Army has been deployed to assist with rescue operations, particularly in flood-affected areas like Gadigarh.
A cloudburst in Doda’s Charu Nallah area triggered flash floods, causing at least four fatalities and damaging over ten houses. In Kishtwar, heavy rains led to the collapse of the Mughal Maidan bridge, further isolating affected communities.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall until Wednesday morning, raising the risk of additional flash floods, landslides, and cloudbursts. Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid waterlogged or river-adjacent areas.
Mobile networks remain erratic, complicating rescue and relief operations. Over ten train services, including the Vande Bharat Express, have been canceled as a precaution.
Emergency services, local authorities, and the army are actively engaged in relief and evacuation efforts. Officials continue to monitor river levels and warn residents to remain alert as rainfall persists across the region
