India Advocates for UN Development Autonomy and Honors Peacekeepers

Ranit Kr. Singh , New Delhi - India has strongly emphasized the need to preserve the primary role of the United Nations' development pillar, asserting that national ownership must remain central to global development initiatives. Speaking at the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Operational Activities for Development Segment, India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, engaged in a high-level dialogue with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed. Harish underscored that any future reforms or recalibrations to the UN Resident Coordinator system must strictly focus on strengthening program support tailored to individual countries' specific development priorities, rather than imposing external frameworks.

Addressing governance and funding complexities within the UN system, the Indian envoy called for heightened transparency, strict accountability, and a comprehensive assessment of the Resident Coordinator system’s actual developmental impact. This diplomatic push comes amid ongoing international discussions regarding the future funding structures and organizational governance of UN operational activities. Harish reiterated that the core mission of these global bodies should seamlessly align with and support the sovereign development agendas of host nations.

In a separate solemn engagement, the Permanent Missions of India and Austria co-hosted a memorial in New York to mark the International Day of UN Peacekeepers. The event honored nearly 4,000 blue helmets, including 184 Indian personnel, who have made the supreme sacrifice under the UN flag since 1948. The ceremony specifically recognized 45 uniformed peacekeepers lost globally over the past year, while highlighting India's legacy as a premier troop-contributing nation, having deployed nearly 300,000 personnel across 50 missions. The event also celebrated Major Abhilasha Barak, an Indian peacekeeper in Lebanon who received the prestigious 2025 Military Gender Advocate of the Year award.
