Residents of Delhi and the surrounding NCR region woke up to waterlogged streets and traffic disruptions as heavy overnight rainfall triggered severe flooding across multiple areas. This came even as the water level of the Yamuna River showed signs of receding, offering little relief to the affected population.
Visuals from the ground showed vehicles stranded, residential colonies submerged, and commuters wading through waist-deep water. Several key roads, including underpasses and arterial routes, were blocked, forcing traffic diversions and causing long delays during the morning rush hour. Public transport services, including buses, were also hit by water accumulation on major routes.
Local authorities said that while the Yamuna’s water level had gone down compared to previous days, excess rainfall overwhelmed the city’s drainage system. Low-lying areas such as parts of East Delhi, Gurugram, and Noida were among the worst affected. Residents complained of water entering homes and shops, leading to property damage and disruption in daily life.
Disaster management teams were deployed in multiple pockets to assist with pumping out water, clearing blockages, and providing relief. Officials added that the civic machinery is on high alert to prevent further escalation, with emergency helplines being made available for those stranded.
Experts have pointed out that such recurrent urban flooding highlights long-standing concerns over poor drainage infrastructure, unplanned construction, and reduced green cover in the region. They emphasized that beyond immediate relief, long-term flood management planning is essential to prevent similar crises in the future.
