Desk Correspondent , Kolkata - Hours after Suvendu Adhikari took oath as West Bengal's new Chief Minister in a grand ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior BJP leaders, a group of BJP supporters celebrated by parading outside Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee's residence here on Saturday. The supporters, riding motorcycles and cars adorned with BJP flags, shouted slogans like "Jai Shri Ram" and "Chor Mamata" while one activist prominently displayed a life-size cutout of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A video circulated by PTI captured the scenes, showing the group making multiple rounds in front of the former Chief Minister's house, with one man brandishing the Modi cutout and repeatedly chanting "Chor Mamata" directly at the gate.
The incident escalated into a brief confrontation when a gatekeeper intervened, asking the group to leave. Supporters continued their aggressive sloganeering as another autorickshaw with BJP flags joined them. One participant was heard referencing alleged financial irregularities with the remark, "We have been giving ₹10 lakh." This demonstration occurred amid scaled-down security outside Banerjee's residence and that of her nephew Abhishek Banerjee following TMC's electoral defeat. The event underscores the charged political atmosphere in the state following the BJP's historic victory in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections.
In a major political upset, the BJP ousted the TMC after 15 years in power, securing 207 seats out of 294 in the Assembly. Mamata Banerjee lost her stronghold Bhabanipur seat to Suvendu Adhikari by over 15,000 votes. Adhikari, a former close aide turned rival, retained his Nandigram seat and was sworn in as CM on Saturday along with five other BJP leaders including Dilip Ghosh. Post-poll violence and rigging allegations by TMC leaders, including Banerjee, had marked the transition, with the Governor dissolving the Assembly on Thursday to facilitate the new government formation. The celebrations outside Banerjee's home reflect the triumphant mood in BJP ranks after ending TMC's long dominance.
