The Australian Parliament has approved a new law that allows quicker deportation of non-citizens to the Pacific island nation of Nauru. The legislation is aimed at tightening border control and streamlining the handling of individuals who enter or remain in Australia without legal status.
Under the new framework, authorities will be able to expedite the transfer process of asylum seekers and other non-citizens to offshore detention facilities in Nauru. The government said the move is necessary to maintain strict immigration rules and discourage irregular arrivals by sea.
Human rights groups and refugee advocates have criticized the decision, arguing that it could lead to harsh conditions for people seeking asylum and limit their access to fair legal processes. They have called on the government to reconsider its reliance on offshore detention policies.
Officials, however, maintain that the policy is crucial for national security and border protection, emphasizing that Australia remains committed to managing migration in an orderly manner.
