Pakistan – Middle-order batter Asif Ali has formally announced his retirement from international cricket, choosing to focus on domestic competitions and franchise leagues across the globe.
Asif Ali, aged 33, represented Pakistan in 21 One-Day Internationals and 58 Twenty20 Internationals, scoring 959 runs. Recognised for his explosive batting style and ability to finish matches, he gained fame during the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 when he smashed four sixes in the penultimate over against Afghanistan, steering Pakistan to a thrilling victory.
In his announcement shared on social media, Asif Ali described wearing the national jersey as “the greatest honour” of his life. He said serving Pakistan was his proudest achievement and expressed gratitude to fans for their unwavering support. He assured that he will continue contributing to cricket through league and domestic tournaments.
Cricket experts noted that his exclusion from Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup played a role in his decision to step away from international duty. His absence from the tournament highlighted the increasing competition for middle-order spots in the team, making it difficult for him to secure a place.
Tributes poured in from fans and former teammates, acknowledging Asif Ali’s impact in crucial white-ball encounters. While his international journey has concluded, selectors believe his experience and aggressive approach will continue to inspire young players in Pakistan’s cricketing setup.
