West Asia War: 16 Killed in Israeli Strikes on South Lebanon Despite Ceasefire

News Desk - At least 16 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon overnight on June 18-19, 2026, despite a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah, while planned high-stakes talks between the U.S. and Iran were called off in Geneva, Switzerland due to the intense fighting that threatened to derail a recently signed peace deal.

Lebanon's state-run National News Agency reported the Israeli airstrikes and artillery shelling killed at least 16 people and left several others wounded across the Nabatieh district in southern Lebanon, with at least eight people killed in Haruf alone in what the agency called "several massacres". The Israeli military confirmed that fighting in southern Lebanon killed four Israeli soldiers, including one lieutenant colonel, marking the highest combined casualty count since the U.S.-Iran deal was signed on June 17-18.

The deadly exchange threatened to undermine a memorandum of understanding signed between Washington and Tehran just two days earlier, which opens a 60-day window for negotiations on Tehran's nuclear program and returning oil traffic through the Strait of Hormuz to prewar levels. Iranian officials did not travel to Switzerland as planned for Friday talks, insisting that Israeli strikes on Iranian-backed Hezbollah militants in Lebanon must stop before negotiations can take place, leading Vice President JD Vance to also postpone his trip to Geneva. A U.S. official confirmed that Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a renewed ceasefire on Friday, June 19, mediated by U.S. and Qatari diplomats, going into effect at 4 p.m. local time (9 a.m. ET), though clashes continued even after the ceasefire was supposed to be in effect.

The fragility of the ceasefire and the postponement of U.S.-Iran talks with no rescheduled date announced underscores the volatility of the West Asia conflict and the significant strain on the peace deal less than two days after it was signed. While the U.S. State Department announced fresh discussions between Israel and Lebanon will take place in Washington next week, the continued fighting and skepticism from Iran's supreme leader about the deal raise serious questions about whether diplomacy can prevent further escalation in the region.
