Nepal is witnessing one of its darkest phases of political unrest as violent protests have spiraled out of control, targeting senior leaders and their families. Former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife were physically attacked by demonstrators, while the situation turned even more tragic when the wife of another former Prime Minister, Jhala Nath Khanal, was set on fire and killed during the unrest.
The protests, largely led by angry youth, have grown increasingly aggressive in recent weeks, with reports of mobs resorting to physical violence, arson, and property damage. What began as demonstrations against unemployment and governance issues has now escalated into a direct assault on political figures, exposing the fragile state of law and order in the country.
Police and security forces have been deployed in large numbers, but their presence has done little to contain the fury of the crowds. Analysts warn that the scale of the violence marks a dangerous shift in Nepal’s political landscape, where frustrations among the younger generation are spilling into dangerous extremes.
Political observers have condemned the attacks, calling them a brutal assault on democracy. Families of the victims are demanding justice, while the government faces mounting pressure to restore peace and prevent further escalation.
The wave of violence has shaken Nepal’s leadership, leaving the nation deeply unsettled about what lies ahead.
