Former US President Donald Trump has stirred controversy with his remarks on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, suggesting that Ukraine should give up its pursuit of NATO membership and accept Russia’s control over Crimea. His comments came just ahead of a scheduled meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Trump argued that such concessions could help bring an end to the war, which has dragged on for over two years. He said that continuing the conflict without compromise would only prolong suffering and damage for Ukraine.
The remarks drew sharp criticism from Ukrainian officials and supporters, who maintain that NATO membership is crucial for Ukraine’s security and that Crimea remains an integral part of Ukrainian territory. Zelenskyy has repeatedly stated that Ukraine will not accept any deal that undermines its sovereignty or territorial integrity.
International observers noted that Trump’s statement reflects a more conciliatory stance toward Moscow, one that sharply contrasts with the current US administration’s continued military and diplomatic support for Kyiv.
As the war continues with heavy casualties and destruction, the debate over possible settlement terms remains a contentious issue in global politics.
