Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - U.S. President Donald Trump said American and Iranian officials will meet in Doha, while Iran insisted no talks with Washington are scheduled in the coming days. The White House said envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner will travel to Qatar for high-level meetings this week.
Trump said the meeting would take place in Doha on Tuesday and described it as potentially important, saying Iran had requested the talks. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt later confirmed that Witkoff and Kushner were flying to Qatar, framing the trip as part of ongoing discussions on the memorandum of understanding. Reuters also reported that both sides had negotiators headed to Doha, though the exact format of the meeting remained unclear.
Tehran, however, pushed back strongly on Trump’s claim, saying no meetings with the U.S. had been scheduled at any level in the coming days. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said an Iranian technical delegation would visit Qatar, but that trip had nothing to do with U.S. officials or direct talks. Iran said the delegation’s purpose was to review implementation of parts of the MoU, not to launch new negotiations.
The disagreement highlights how fragile the diplomatic channel remains after the latest round of hostilities. While Washington presents the Doha trip as a breakthrough, Tehran is insisting on a narrower technical visit and denying any formal sit-down with U.S. officials.
The two sides are publicly describing the same Qatar trip in very different ways. That gap suggests the Doha contact may be more limited and more contested than Washington’s framing implies.
