Bangkok, August 28 – Thailand’s Constitutional Court on Wednesday disqualified Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra after finding her guilty of breaching the constitution in connection with a leaked phone call involving Cambodia’s Prime Minister.
The court ruled that Paetongtarn’s discussion in the leaked call amounted to an abuse of authority and a violation of Thailand’s national interest. Opposition lawmakers had filed the petition, alleging she compromised diplomatic protocol by engaging in the conversation.
The verdict marks a major political setback for the Shinawatra family, which has long dominated Thailand’s politics but also faced repeated ousters through coups and legal battles. Paetongtarn, daughter of former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, had taken office only last year.
The court’s ruling has triggered fresh uncertainty in Thai politics, with lawmakers now expected to select a new prime minister in the coming weeks.
