Telegram Challenges Centre’s Temporary Ban in Delhi High Court Over NEET Leak Concerns

News Desk - Telegram has moved the Delhi High Court challenging the Centre’s temporary ban on the platform ahead of the NEET-UG re-test, setting up an urgent legal fight over the government’s move to curb alleged paper leak activity.

According to reports, the Centre ordered a temporary block on Telegram’s services in India after the National Testing Agency raised concerns that the app was being used by organised cheating networks to circulate leaked or fake question papers, coordinate malpractice, and spread misinformation. Officials also alleged that some channels were offering access to the re-examination paper for money, which strengthened the case for the restriction.

Telegram’s petition was mentioned before a vacation bench of the Delhi High Court, which agreed to hear the matter on an urgent basis. The company is reportedly challenging the validity of the ban, arguing that the action affects millions of ordinary users rather than only those allegedly involved in the leak. The Centre’s order under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act was said to remain in force until June 22, while another direction asked Telegram to disable its message editing feature until June 30.

The case now places the Delhi High Court at the center of a wider debate between exam security enforcement and digital platform access rights. The court’s next move could shape how far the government can go in restricting online services during high-stakes examinations.
