Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav has publicly urged voters in Bihar to support Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as India's next Prime Minister following the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, a move that has drawn swift dismissal from the BJP. Speaking at a rally in Nawada on Tuesday, as part of the Congress-led "Voter Adhikar Yatra," Yadav declared it was time to oust the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the upcoming state assembly polls and position Gandhi as the country's future leader.
Yadav, who was joined by Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders on the third day of the fortnight-long campaign, stated, "In the assembly polls, we will root out the NDA, which has been running Bihar like a rickety old car for 20 years. And in the next Lok Sabha elections, we will make Rahul Gandhi the prime minister," a statement met with cheers. He praised Gandhi as a leader who has given Prime Minister Narendra Modi "sleepless" nights through his outreach. Yadav also took aim at Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for allegedly copying opposition promises and neglecting crucial issues like education and jobs. Furthermore, he accused the BJP and Election Commission of conspiring to delete names of eligible voters through the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, calling it "nothing less than dacoity of votes".
However, the BJP quickly dismissed Yadav’s endorsement. Party MP Deepak Prakash called it "mungeri lal ke haseen sapne (unrealistic dreams)," asserting that there is "no vacancy for the prime minister's post". The "Voter Adhikar Yatra," which commenced on Sunday, is scheduled to conclude with a rally in Patna on September 1.
