Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has arrived in India for a three-day visit aimed at deepening strategic and economic cooperation, with China’s growing assertiveness in the region giving the trip added urgency. The visit is also meant to strengthen the Japan-India partnership under the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” framework.
Takaichi is in New Delhi for the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, where she will hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on trade, investment, defence, energy security and technology. Japanese officials said the visit is designed to strengthen relations with India and advance cooperation in economic security, including energy, investment and innovation. A large Japanese business delegation is accompanying her, reflecting the emphasis on supply chains, semiconductors and critical minerals.
The broader geopolitical backdrop is central to the trip. The two sides are expected to discuss maritime security, defence technology, and a more resilient industrial value chain linking the Bay of Bengal and India’s northeast. Reports also say India and Japan may sign around ten memorandums of understanding, including agreements related to artificial intelligence, energy resilience and business cooperation.
The visit comes at a time when both countries are trying to manage regional uncertainty and reduce economic vulnerability. Japan sees India as important to preserving a free and open Indo-Pacific, while India values Japanese investment, technology and support for resilient supply chains. That shared agenda has made the annual summit one of the most important diplomatic meetings in the relationship.
Takaichi’s India visit is less about ceremony and more about strategic alignment in a more unsettled Asia. With China tensions rising, both governments appear ready to use the summit to turn shared concerns into concrete cooperation.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said Japan is committed to investing in India, with the India-Japan Summit focusing on semiconductors, AI, supply chains, and long-term economic cooperation.
