New Delhi – The Supreme Court has reassigned the ongoing case concerning stray dog management to a newly constituted three-judge bench, with the next hearing scheduled for August 14. Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, currently on leave, has tasked Justice B.R. Gavai with overseeing the matter’s allocation.
The case, which involves challenges to previous orders and guidelines on controlling stray dog populations, has drawn attention due to concerns over public safety, animal welfare, and municipal responsibilities. Various state governments and animal rights groups are parties to the proceedings.
The decision to form a new bench follows procedural changes aimed at ensuring a fresh review of submissions and evidence. The earlier bench had been hearing arguments on vaccination, sterilisation, and relocation policies for stray dogs.
Legal experts suggest that the upcoming hearing may focus on balancing community safety with humane treatment, as per existing animal protection laws. The court’s final decision is expected to impact municipal rules across multiple states.
Meanwhile, civic bodies have been urged to maintain current measures until further directions are issued.
