Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Ali Khamenei was buried at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad, Iran’s holiest Shia site, after days of funeral processions across Iran and Iraq. The burial brought an end to six days of public mourning ceremonies that drew large crowds in several cities.

The final procession moved through Mashhad before Khamenei’s coffin was taken into the shrine complex as night fell. Reports said mourners had already paid respects in Tehran, Qom, Najaf and Karbala before the body returned to Mashhad, his birthplace. The burial took place at the Shrine of Imam Reza, a site of deep religious significance for Shia Muslim.

The ceremonies followed Khamenei’s killing in an Israeli strike in February, which also killed several members of his family. State and international reports said the funeral was among the largest in recent memory, with officials and media describing huge crowds in Mashhad for the final rites.

Khamenei’s burial in Mashhad closed a week of mass mourning that spanned multiple cities and two countries. His interment at the Imam Reza shrine underscored both his personal ties to the city and the shrine’s central place in Iran’s Shia identity.
