Desk Correspondent , Delhi - India has entered the year 2026 under the grip of a harsh winter, with several northern and eastern states experiencing extreme cold wave conditions. In the national capital, Delhi recorded its coldest December day in six years on New Year's Eve, with daytime temperatures struggling to rise amidst dense fog. This biting cold is expected to continue into early January, with weather officials warning that "cold day" conditions will persist as north-westerly winds dominate the region, making the start of the year particularly difficult for commuters and residents alike.

The impact of the plummeting temperatures has been felt across various regions, leading to significant changes in daily life. In Assam, authorities in Guwahati have ordered schools to remain closed for a week to protect children from the sharp fall in daytime temperatures and intermittent drizzle. Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, visibility has dropped dangerously low due to thick fog, with temperatures in some districts dipping close to 4 degrees Celsius. Even in the desert state of Rajasthan, several towns reported single-digit minimum temperatures, reflecting the widespread and growing intensity of the winter season across the country.

While the north shivers, other parts of the country experienced unusual weather patterns during the New Year celebrations. Mumbai saw light morning showers on January 1, which provided some relief from pollution levels but added to the general chill. In the higher reaches of West Bengal and Himachal Pradesh, light snow and fog have been reported, bringing cheer to tourists but causing travel delays. As the cold wave tightens its grip, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has urged travelers to exercise caution during early morning and late-night hours, as visibility remains a major concern across multiple states.
