News Desk : Former India captain Rohit Sharma was conferred the prestigious Padma Shri award by President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan today. The honour recognises Rohit's exceptional contribution to Indian cricket and his remarkable achievements across formats over a distinguished international career.
One of India's most successful captains, Rohit led the national team to the ICC T20 World Cup title in 2024 and the Champions Trophy triumph in 2025. His leadership and consistency with the bat have played a pivotal role in India's success on the global stage. Rohit is regarded as one of the greatest ODI batters of his generation, having amassed 11,720 runs in 285 matches. He remains the only player to score three ODI double centuries and holds the record for the highest individual score in the format with his iconic 264 against Sri Lanka.
The Mumbai batter also enjoyed a successful Test and T20I career. He scored 4,301 runs in 67 Tests, including 12 centuries, while finishing as the leading run-scorer in men's T20 internationals upon his retirement from the format after India's 2024 World Cup victory. He is also one of the few cricketers to have been part of two T20 World Cup-winning Indian teams, in 2007 and 2024.
The Padma Shri adds another significant honour to Rohit's glittering career, celebrating not only his achievements as a batter but also his impact as a leader. The award was presented during the second Civil Investiture Ceremony of the Padma Awards 2026, where several distinguished personalities from various fields were honoured for their contributions to the nation.
