In a major step towards clean and sustainable transportation, the Ministry of Railways has approved India’s first hydrogen-powered train for the Jind-Sonipat railway route in Haryana. The project is being seen as a milestone in the country’s green energy mission and railway modernization plans.
The hydrogen train will run using fuel cell technology, which produces electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. Unlike diesel engines, the train will emit only water vapour, making it an environmentally friendly alternative for rail transport.
According to railway officials, the train is designed with modern safety systems and advanced technology to ensure smooth and efficient operations. The project also includes a hydrogen storage and refuelling facility at Jind station. Experts believe the initiative will help reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels in the railway sector.
The train is expected to operate at a speed of around 75 kmph and will mainly serve passengers travelling between Jind and Sonipat. Indian Railways aims to use this project as a pilot model before introducing hydrogen-powered trains on other routes across the country.
Officials have described the approval as an important achievement for India’s transport sector. With this move, India joins a select group of countries working on hydrogen-based railway technology, marking another step towards cleaner and greener public transportation.
