The Punjab government has extended the closure of all educational institutions, including government and private schools, colleges, and universities, until 7 September due to the state's worsening flood situation. The announcement was made by Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, who cited directives from Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. Schools have been closed since 27 August, with the order now extended from the previous date of 3 September.
Punjab is battling its worst floods in decades, with the government officially declaring all 23 districts as flood-hit. The disaster, caused by swollen Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers after heavy rains in Punjab and catchment areas in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, has claimed at least 30 lives and affected over 3.5 lakh people. Over 1,400 villages are inundated, and around 3 lakh acres of farmland are submerged.
Rescue and relief operations by the Army, NDRF, BSF, and police are ongoing, with nearly 20,000 people rescued so far. Minister Bains also issued a stern warning to private institutions for reportedly calling staff to work during the closure, promising strict action against non-compliance.
