Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India will withstand any pressure that may arise from the United States’ decision to impose tariffs of up to 50 percent on certain goods. His remarks came amid growing concern over the potential impact of the new trade measures on Indian exports.
Speaking at a public gathering, Modi assured that the government is prepared to handle the situation and that India’s economy is strong enough to face external challenges. He emphasised that self-reliance and a stronger domestic market would help cushion the effects of global trade tensions.
The looming tariffs from Washington are expected to hit sectors such as steel, aluminium, and certain manufactured goods. Analysts say the move could strain bilateral trade ties at a time when India has been working to expand its exports and reduce its dependence on imports.
Industry bodies have expressed concern over the impact on small and medium enterprises that rely on the US market. However, some experts believe that the situation could also accelerate India’s push for diversification of trade and development of new markets.
The government is expected to hold talks with US officials in the coming weeks to explore ways of easing the tariff impact, even as India prepares for possible economic adjustments.
