Former speaker of Ukraine’s parliament, Andriy Parubiy, has been shot dead in Lviv, President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on Friday.
Parubiy, who was a prominent political figure and a former leader of the Ukrainian parliament, was attacked in the western city of Lviv. Local officials reported that he was rushed to a hospital but did not survive his injuries.
The circumstances around the shooting are still under investigation. Ukrainian authorities have not released details about possible suspects or motives behind the attack.
President Zelensky, in his statement, expressed condolences to Parubiy’s family and described the incident as a significant loss for Ukraine. He also called for a swift investigation to bring those responsible to justice.
Parubiy, 53, was a key figure during Ukraine’s political upheavals and played a central role during the Euromaidan protests. He also served as secretary of the National Security and Defense Council before becoming the parliamentary speaker in 2016.
His death comes at a time when Ukraine continues to face ongoing challenges amid Russia’s invasion and internal security concerns.
