Desk Correspondent , Noida - The heartbreaking final words of 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta have sparked national outrage after he drowned in a water-logged construction pit in Greater Noida’s Sector 150. Returning from his Gurugram office in the early hours of Saturday, January 17, 2026, Yuvraj’s car plunged into a 50-foot-deep flooded basement through an unbarricaded wall amidst dense winter fog. In a desperate plea for life, Yuvraj called his father, Raj Kumar Mehta, crying, "Papa, I am stuck, the car has fallen into the drain." Despite his father reaching the spot and Yuvraj using his phone's torch to signal for help while standing on the roof of his sinking vehicle, he could not be saved.

Eyewitnesses and family members have alleged a "lethal delay" in the rescue operation. Reports indicate that Yuvraj survived for nearly two hours in the freezing water, but emergency responders—including local police and fire services—refused to enter the pit, citing cold temperatures and a lack of trained divers. A local delivery agent, Moninder, eventually tied a rope around his waist and dived in to help, but by then, the car had already submerged. "My son was alive for nearly two hours... crying out for help, but the officials were ill-equipped," the grieving father stated, adding that some onlookers were busy recording videos instead of assisting.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the police have registered an FIR at the Knowledge Park station against two construction firms, MZ Wiztown Planners Ltd and Lotus Greens Construction Pvt Ltd, under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for culpable homicide and negligence. The Noida Authority has also taken swift disciplinary action, sacking a junior engineer and issuing show-cause notices to senior officials for failing to install necessary barricades and reflectors in the area. As the community mourns, the incident has highlighted a severe lapse in urban safety and the lack of rapid-response aquatic rescue capabilities in the NCR.
