Desk Correspondent , Bhubaneswar - The Odisha Police have arrested 1,771 individuals and seized over 3,000 kg of ganja alongside 20 unlicensed guns during a massive five-day statewide crackdown from May 12–16. Initiated under the instructions of DGP Yogesh Bahadur Khurania and supervised by ADGP Sanjay Kumar, the special drive aimed to execute non-bailable warrants, apprehend wanted fugitives, and curb the smuggling of narcotics, illegal weapons, and minerals.
During the operation, law enforcement registered 31 Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) cases, resulting in the seizure of 16.6 grams of brown sugar, vehicles, and cash alongside the massive cannabis haul. Additionally, five notorious criminals were detained under the National Security Act (NSA), while over 1,000 habitual offenders were booked under Sections 126 and 129 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The police also cracked down on liquor trafficking, registering 716 excise cases across the state.
The comprehensive drive further targeted illegal mining, firearm trafficking, and traffic violations. Officials registered 136 cases related to illegal mining, arresting 60 people and confiscating 179 transport vehicles and earthmovers. Furthermore, 13 individuals were jailed for illegal firearm trafficking. On the roads, police penalized 966 drunk drivers, impounded their vehicles, and collected a staggering ₹1.89 crore in fines under the Motor Vehicles Act, while also rescuing 33 cows from smuggling rings.
