The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026 reveal that for the first time in 14 years, the growth of Asia’s top universities has hit a standstill. Notably, no Indian institution has entered the top 100, highlighting a significant gap in global competitiveness. However, India ranks second worldwide in the total number of universities listed, trailing only the United States.
The University of Oxford retains the number one position for a record 10th consecutive year, continuing its global dominance. Leading Asian institutions, including Tsinghua University (12th), Peking University (13th), and the National University of Singapore (17th), have shown no improvement compared to previous years. Similarly, the number of Chinese universities in the top 200 remains unchanged at 13, ending the decade-long surge observed until 2024.
Experts suggest that this plateau reflects intensifying global competition and emphasizes the need for Asian universities to innovate in research, teaching, and international collaboration. Meanwhile, the US continues to decline slightly in global rankings but still leads in the overall number of institutions listed.
