Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has ignited a political controversy following his refusal to wear a traditional Muslim 'topi' (headgear) at a madrasa event in Patna. The incident, captured in a widely circulated video, occurred during the centenary celebrations of the state madrasa education board. Despite being offered the headgear twice – first by a board member and then by Minority Minister Zama Khan – Kumar declined, instead placing it on Khan's head.
This refusal has sparked questions about his "secular credentials" and comes just months before the Bihar Assembly elections, where Muslims constitute around 18% of the electorate. The move is particularly notable as Kumar has historically been pictured wearing skull caps at Iftar parties and Islamic events. However, since rejoining the NDA camp last year, he notably did not wear one at his own Iftar party in March.
Critics have dubbed this a "Paltu moment," referencing his "Paltu chacha" moniker for frequently changing political alliances. The JD(U)'s recent support for the Waqf law has already alienated a section of the Muslim community, with several Muslim leaders quitting the party. This latest incident further intensifies scrutiny on Kumar's political strategy ahead of the crucial polls.
