Nepal’s capital remained under tight security on Wednesday, September 10, as soldiers patrolled the streets following two days of violent anti-corruption protests that left at least 19 people dead and dozens injured. The unrest, largely driven by Gen Z activists, erupted after the government briefly imposed a ban on social media platforms, which many saw as an attack on free expression. Demonstrators stormed key government buildings, including the parliament and Supreme Court, while several residences of senior leaders were also attacked.
The violence forced Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign on Monday, creating a political vacuum as the nation grapples with one of its worst internal crises in years. Authorities imposed an indefinite curfew in Kathmandu and handed over security operations to the Nepal Army. The chaos also hit international travel, with the capital’s airport shut for hours and multiple flights, including those bound for India, diverted to Lucknow and Delhi. Several Indian carriers have suspended their operations citing safety concerns.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged calm and emphasized the need for stability in the Himalayan nation, while Nepalese officials signaled that dialogue with protest leaders could be on the table once order is restored. However, with deep anger over corruption and governance failures, the situation remains volatile despite heavy military presence. Protesters have vowed to continue their movement until concrete reforms are promised, leaving Nepal at a tense crossroads.
