Desk Correspondent , Varanasi - The Uttar Pradesh Police have officially moved to halt a wave of online misinformation surrounding the beautification and redevelopment of Varanasi’s historic Manikarnika Ghat. On Sunday, law enforcement confirmed the registration of eight FIRs against multiple individuals for the widespread circulation of "fake and manipulated" images that falsely depicted the historic crematorium as being replaced by modern, alien structures. Investigation into the digital trail revealed that these viral images were high-resolution CGI renders—not actual photographs—designed to mislead the public into believing that the heritage of the ancient site was being erased.

The Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) clarified that the ongoing project is strictly focused on improving facilities for pilgrims and mourning families, including better sanitation and seating, while preserving the sacred architecture. "A coordinated effort was made to incite unrest by using fabricated visuals that have zero connection to the government’s approved blueprint," stated a senior police official. The FIRs, filed under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to public mischief and the spread of inflammatory content, target those who used these "digital fakes" to provoke protests and religious sentiment against the state's urban renewal efforts.

To restore public confidence, the district administration has proactively shared the genuine 3D models and project details with local stakeholders and media houses. Cyber experts are currently working to identify the original source of the renders to determine if there was a deeper organized intent to stall the high-profile project. Authorities have warned that further arrests are likely as they continue to monitor social media for "technological sabotage" aimed at derailing infrastructure works in the holy city.
