Phoenix, Arizona was struck by a massive dust storm, known as a haboob, on the evening of August 25, 2025, which quickly plunged the city into darkness before being followed by a monsoon storm. This powerful weather event left thousands without power and significantly disrupted air travel.
The haboob, a severe dust storm caused by strong winds from a thunderstorm, darkened the sky in an "almost apocalyptic scene" as it consumed homes and moved across the Phoenix area. Over 41,000 Salt River Project customers and an additional 7,400 Arizona Public Service customers lost power. Operations at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport were halted, leading to 104 flight delays and three cancellations, with damage to the airport being assessed. Winds whipped debris across streets, and downed branches were reported.
Haboobs are formed when a thunderstorm's downdraft hits dry ground, forcing a "wall of dust" high into the air, potentially reaching thousands of feet and spanning miles. Visibility can be reduced to zero, posing extreme danger, especially for drivers. Authorities stress the "Pull Aside, Stay Alive" safety campaign, advising drivers to pull off the road, turn off all lights, and remain in their vehicles during such storms.
