Ranit Kr. Singh , Imphal - Manipur Director General of Police Rajiv Singh announced on Monday that the state police, in coordination with the central government, have identified 5,406 sensitive, violent, and communal social media posts, successfully taking down around 3,200 of them since June 2023. Speaking at a ceremony at the 1st Manipur Rifles Ground—where Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh flagged off 477 new police vehicles—the DGP emphasized that monitoring and verifying fake news is critical to maintaining public order. The strict digital crackdown also resulted in the blocking of 187 pages and accounts following the outbreak of devastating ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which have claimed over 260 lives since May 2023.
The security push comes alongside a major institutional overhaul fueled by a ₹196.61 crore modernization grant approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs in late 2025. The freshly procured fleet of vehicles, including armored cars and two-wheelers, is designed to boost response times and logistical support across the state, with 54 percent of the vehicles strategically deployed to the volatile hill districts and the remainder serving the valley and technical units. Additionally, the force partnered with the National Security Guards in June 2025 to provide specialized tactical training to its personnel.
On the ground, a dedicated integrated anti-extortion cell has arrested more than 1,000 extortionists across both hill and valley regions. However, the DGP noted that operations against anti-social elements have frequently faced public resistance, including organized protests and roadblocks that obstruct security forces. Appealing for public cooperation, Singh warned that these obstructions only protect elements detrimental to peace, education, and the future of the state's youth.
