Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in Doha and discussed bilateral cooperation as well as the wider West Asia conflict. He also praised Qatar’s mediation role at a moment when U.S. and Iranian negotiators are back in talks through indirect channels.
According to Jaishankar’s post and official reports, the two leaders reviewed energy, trade, investments, connectivity, security and people-to-people ties, and explored new ways to deepen the India-Qatar strategic partnership. Jaishankar also thanked Qatar for ensuring the safety and well-being of the Indian community there, a point that remains central to India’s relations with Doha. The discussion additionally covered assessments of the West Asia conflict and its wider impact, which India is watching closely because of its energy and diaspora stakes in the region.
Qatar’s mediation efforts have gained fresh relevance as U.S. and Iranian negotiators resumed contact in Doha through separate meetings with mediators. Reports say the parties have agreed to continue discussions in the coming period, with the next round to be scheduled after the funeral processions for Iran’s former supreme leader. Jaishankar’s praise for Qatar therefore fits India’s broader interest in regional de-escalation, since a more stable West Asia directly affects energy flows, shipping and Indian nationals across the Gulf.
The meeting in Doha served both a bilateral and regional purpose, reinforcing India-Qatar ties while backing mediation efforts in the U.S.-Iran track. With talks continuing and the conflict still unsettled, Qatar remains one of the key diplomatic channels shaping the next phase of West Asia negotiations.
