Swapna Kumbar, Bengaluru - Tehran has condemned fresh U.S. strikes, saying Washington’s action violates the memorandum of understanding that was meant to reduce hostilities between the two sides. The U.S. said it targeted Iranian missile and drone storage locations and coastal radar sites after an attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the strikes against coastal surveillance facilities breach Article 1 of the MoU, which it argued was supposed to restrain attacks and preserve stability in the region. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy said it responded by targeting U.S. military deployment sites in the region, framing the American operation as an act of aggression. The latest exchange comes after a drone strike on the Singapore-flagged cargo ship M/V Ever Lovely, which U.S. officials said prompted the retaliatory strikes.
The U.S. military said its aircraft struck missile and drone storage facilities and radar positions along the Strait of Hormuz in an operation that lasted about 90 minutes. Washington said the goal was to deter further attacks on commercial shipping and protect freedom of navigation in a key global energy corridor. Iran, meanwhile, is accusing the U.S. of undermining the agreement just as both sides were trying to contain the conflict and avoid a wider escalation.
The latest strikes have deepened mistrust on both sides and raised fresh doubts about the durability of the fragile understanding between Washington and Tehran. With the Strait of Hormuz once again at the center of the confrontation, the risk of tit-for-tat retaliation remains high.
