Indigenous communities in Assam have intensified their long-standing demands for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and constitutional safeguards, leading to widespread protests across Tinsukia, Dhubri, and Dhakuakhana districts. Major ethnic groups, including the Moran, Koch Rajbongshi, and Chutia communities, have taken to the streets, citing unfulfilled promises from the government regarding their recognition. These demonstrations highlight growing frustration over the perceived inaction despite assurances made years ago.
The All Moran Students’ Union (AMSU) orchestrated a significant torch rally in Tinsukia, attracting over 20,000 participants who demanded ST status and Sixth Schedule autonomy, accusing the BJP of failing to honour Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 2016 promise. AMSU has issued a 72-hour ultimatum, threatening a statewide economic blockade from September 15 if their demands are not addressed. Concurrently, the All Koch Rajbongshi Students' Union (AKRSU) protested in Golakganj, Dhubri district, demanding both ST status and a separate Kamatapur state. This protest escalated into a police lathi-charge, resulting in over 50 injuries.
Adding to the collective voice, the Chutia Yuva Sanmilan, Asom (CYSA) organised a torch rally in Dhakuakhana with approximately 600 members, also demanding ST status for their community. CYSA leaders reminded the government of a promise made in the BJP’s 2014 poll manifesto to grant ST status to the Chutias. They warned that the community "can’t be fooled" repeatedly and threatened electoral repercussions against the ruling party if their demands remain unfulfilled.
