Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - The Indian Coast Guard rescued six fishermen from the distressed fishing boat Manju Matha off the Mangaluru coast on June 29 after the vessel sent a VHF distress call reporting flooding and hull damage about 33 nautical miles off the Suratkal coast. The rescue was completed in a difficult operation carried out in rough seas, strong winds, poor visibility and fading daylight.
According to the Coast Guard, ICG Ship Sachet intercepted the distress call at about 4 pm and was immediately diverted to the scene. The ship reached the stranded vessel within 90 minutes, by which time worsening weather had made the situation even more dangerous for the crew and the rescue team. To bring the fishermen to safety, the rescuers used remote-operated lifebuoys designed for use in rough conditions.
By around 6 pm, all six crew members had been rescued safely and without injury. After the operation, ICGS Sachet entered New Mangalore so the rescued fishermen could be disembarked and further formalities completed. The Coast Guard said the rescue showed the value of quick response and seamanship in maritime emergencies.
The operation off Mangaluru ended successfully despite highly unstable conditions at sea. For the six fishermen aboard Manju Matha, the Coast Guard’s fast response likely prevented a far worse outcome.
