India has raised serious concerns about the United States’ recent move to hike H-1B visa fees to US$100,000, calling it a policy that may have humanitarian consequences and urging Washington to account for its ripple effects. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs reminded that the flow of skilled workers between India and the US has done much more than just fill tech roles—it has powered innovation, boosted economic growth, and strengthened ties on both sides.
Among the worries: the way this new fee policy may upend lives—families of professionals could be split, plans thrown into disarray, and people stranded if they are abroad when the rule kicks in. The government says it’s preparing to offer as much help as possible through its embassies and missions, and is in the process of assessing all legal, economic, and social fallout.
India also pointed out that the timing and implementation of this measure seem abrupt. Many in the industry believe there might be misperceptions around how the H-1B program works, and have begun early analysis of who will be affected and how. Finally, New Delhi emphasised that decisions like these don’t only affect numbers and policies—they touch people’s lives deeply. The government hopes the US will consider “mutual benefits,” including strong people-to-people connections, and address the disruptions “suitably.”
