New Delhi— Voting to elect the next Vice President of India will take place today, with Radhakrishnan and Sudershan Reddy emerging as the two leading contenders for the constitutional post.
The election comes as the term of the current Vice President draws to a close, making this one of the most closely watched political developments in Parliament this year. The Vice President of India also serves as the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, giving the role significant influence in shaping legislative proceedings.
Both candidates bring decades of political and public service experience. Radhakrishnan, widely seen as the ruling bloc’s choice, has campaigned on the promise of strengthening parliamentary debate and ensuring smoother coordination between the government and the opposition. Sudershan Reddy, backed by sections of the opposition, has positioned himself as a voice for consensus and accountability within the Upper House.
Members of Parliament from both Houses will cast their votes in a secret ballot. Results are expected to be declared later in the evening. The elected Vice President will take oath soon after, stepping into office at a time when the Rajya Sabha faces crucial discussions on economic reforms, federal relations, and social legislation.
The election is not only a test of political arithmetic but also a signal of broader alliances shaping up ahead of the next general elections.
