Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - India has reaffirmed its independent and balanced approach toward the escalating tensions in West Asia, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasizing that New Delhi does not view regional stability as a zero sum game. During joint briefings with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New Delhi, Jaishankar highlighted India’s rare position of maintaining strong relations simultaneously with the United States, Israel, Iran, and Gulf nations while protecting its strategic and economic interests in the region.
Outlining India’s broader diplomatic framework, Jaishankar presented a five point policy approach focused on maintaining regional and global stability amid rising geopolitical tensions. He said India strongly advocates dialogue and diplomacy as the primary path for conflict resolution and supports safe, secure, and uninterrupted maritime commerce, particularly in sensitive routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. He also stressed the importance of strict respect for international law, opposition to the weaponisation of trade, market access, and critical resources, and the need for trusted partnerships and resilient supply chains to stabilize the global economy. Jaishankar further underlined that India’s interests in West Asia extend beyond politics and security, pointing to the welfare of the large Indian diaspora in the Gulf and the country’s heavy dependence on stable energy imports. He noted that India seeks to maintain productive ties with all major actors in the region without aligning itself exclusively with any one bloc. The remarks reflect India’s increasingly multi-aligned foreign policy strategy, where New Delhi aims to preserve strategic autonomy while expanding partnerships across competing global and regional powers.
India’s latest diplomatic messaging signals a continued commitment to strategic balance in one of the world’s most volatile regions. As tensions in West Asia continue affecting energy markets, shipping routes, and global politics, New Delhi appears determined to safeguard its national interests through diplomacy, diversified partnerships, and an independent foreign policy approach.
