In a significant diplomatic reset, India has appointed senior diplomat Dinesh K Patnaik as the next High Commissioner to Canada. Patnaik, a seasoned officer of the Indian Foreign Service, will take charge at a time when bilateral ties between New Delhi and Ottawa have faced challenges in recent months.
At the same time, Canada has announced the appointment of Christopher Cooter as its new High Commissioner to India. Cooter, a career diplomat, has previously held several key roles, including serving as Canada’s envoy to other countries.
The reciprocal appointments are being seen as an attempt by both nations to ease tensions and rebuild trust. Relations between India and Canada have been under strain, and the new envoys are expected to play a crucial role in steering dialogue forward.
Observers believe these changes could open the door for greater engagement in trade, security, and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
