Ranit Kr. Singh , New Delhi — The Union Government of India has officially approved the strategic sale of the Indian Medicines Pharmaceutical Corporation Limited (IMPCL) to Delhi-based Skymap Pharmaceuticals Private Limited for ₹121.01 crore. An empowered Group of Ministers cleared the highest financial bid, handing over 100% equity shareholding along with complete management control of the public sector enterprise. While critics highlight that the final transaction represents a loss against the cumulative long-term value and state capital injected into the asset over decades, the Ministry of Finance confirmed that the winning bid successfully exceeded the government's internally set reserve price.
IMPCL, established in 1978 under the administrative jurisdiction of the Ministry of AYUSH, has spent decades manufacturing and supplying standardized Ayurvedic and Unani medicines across nationwide government healthcare channels with . The strategic disinvestment marks a decisive milestone in the administration's broader asset monetization and disinvestment agenda, which targets an ambitious ₹80,000 crore for the current fiscal year. Final financial bids were opened earlier this year following rigorous security clearances from the Ministry of Home Affairs, narrowing the competition down to two technically qualified private institutional players.
The multi-layered transaction was executed using a two-stage competitive bidding framework, drawing oversight from the Inter-Ministerial Group and the Core Group of Secretaries on Disinvestment. Following the formal issuance of the Letter of Award, top officials from the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) alongside the AYUSH Ministry have been fully authorized to fast-track and close the remaining transfer protocols. Skymap Pharmaceuticals, an established manufacturer of diverse formulations since 2006, will now integrate the traditional medicine PSU to scale its domestic and export healthcare portfolios.
