On the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, the Union government announced gallantry awards for 36 Indian Air Force personnel who played key roles in the recently conducted Operation Sindoor. The recognition highlights acts of courage, skill, and dedication in a high-risk military mission aimed at safeguarding national security.
Nine fighter pilots have been awarded the Vir Chakra, India’s third-highest wartime gallantry medal, for their exceptional bravery and precision during aerial operations. Twenty-six others received the Vayu Sena Medal for their distinguished service, while one officer was honoured with the Shaurya Chakra for outstanding valour outside of direct combat.
In a rare move, the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal—the nation’s highest wartime distinguished service award—was conferred upon seven senior officers from the Air Force, Navy, and Army. The honour recognises strategic leadership and exceptional planning in executing the mission.
President Droupadi Murmu approved a total of 127 gallantry medals and 40 distinguished service awards this year, covering personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and paramilitary forces. The announcement serves as a reminder of the commitment and sacrifices made by defence personnel in safeguarding the nation.
The awards will be formally presented at upcoming military investiture ceremonies. For many of the decorated officers, this year’s Independence Day will carry an added sense of pride, symbolising the nation’s gratitude for their service.
