On Saturday, 6 August 2022, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau filed a charge sheet in a Mohali court against former state minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot in a corruption case. The charge sheet, filed in the court of Additional and Session Judge Sandeep Kumar Singla, also names former Mohali District Forest Officer (DFO) Guramanpreet Singh and Kamaljeet Singh, who served as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Dharamsot.
Dharamsot, who was the social welfare and forest minister in the Captain Amarinder Singh-led government, was arrested in June and is currently in judicial custody. The allegations stem from his time as minister and include accepting bribes and commissions for felling trees, issuing permits, transferring department officials, and processing departmental purchases and no-objection certificates. The FIR, registered on 7 June, cited irregularities in the awarding of contracts for cutting forest trees.
The arrest of Dharamsot, a five-time former Congress MLA, reportedly came after information was provided by DFO Guramanpreet Singh, who was arrested following a sting video operation. Charges against the three accused have been filed under several sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act for taking illegal gratification and criminal misconduct, as well as for criminal conspiracy under the Indian Penal Code. The court has set 8 August as the next hearing date for the case.
