News Desk - The EPFO is preparing to roll out UPI- and ATM-based PF withdrawals by month-end, which would let subscribers access part of their provident fund much faster through a dedicated app linked to BHIM and other UPI platforms.
The new system is expected to allow instant withdrawals of up to 75% of the PF balance, with the remaining amount continuing to stay in the account. That makes the process much quicker and easier than the current claim-based system, especially for members who need money urgently. But the convenience comes with an important tax condition: if you withdraw before completing five years of continuous service, the amount is generally treated as taxable income.
If the five-year mark has not been completed, the full withdrawal can be added to your income and taxed according to your slab, including your contribution, employer contribution, and accumulated interest. EPFO may deduct TDS at 10% if PAN is available and the withdrawal is above the threshold, but that deduction is not the final tax bill. If PAN is not provided, the TDS rate can be much higher, which can reduce the amount you actually receive.
Once a subscriber completes five years of continuous service, PF withdrawals are usually tax-free, subject to the usual rules about account transfers and service continuity. So the key question is not just how quickly money can be withdrawn, but whether the withdrawal qualifies as tax-exempt under EPF rules.
The EPFO’s new UPI and ATM withdrawal system should make PF access far more convenient, but early withdrawals can still trigger a tax bill. The main takeaway is simple: speed is coming, but tax-free treatment still depends on completing five years of continuous service.
