Ananya Lohia , Delhi - Thousands of Muslim devotees gathered on Thursday morning at the historic Jama Masjid and Fatehpuri Masjid in Old Delhi to offer special morning prayers for Eid al- Adha, also known as Bakrid, marking the festival with deep devotion, charity, and vibrant celebrations across the national capital. Dressed in traditional attire, worshippers of all ages filled the courtyards and spilled into the surrounding streets to offer the special morning congregational prayers (namaz), kicking off the festival with immense religious fervor.
Right from the early dawn hours, the streets of Old Delhi saw a steady stream of faithful heading towards the grand mosques. At Jama Masjid, the vast courtyard was filled to capacity, presenting a magnificent sight of community solidarity. Following the completion of the prayers, the air resonated with chants of "Eid Mubarak" as people embraced one another, exchanging warm wishes and sweets. Similar scenes of grand devotion were witnessed outside the Fatehpuri Masjid, where community leaders led the prayers, emphasizing messages of peace, harmony, and global brotherhood.
To ensure the smooth conduct of the massive gatherings, the Delhi Police and local authorities deployed extensive security arrangements and implemented strict traffic diversions across the old city. Beyond the prayers, the core essence of Eid al- Adha which honors the ultimate willingness of Prophet Abraham to sacrifice for God was visible in the acts of charity. Families distributed food and clothing to the less fortunate, ensuring entire community could be part in the joyous occasion.
The morning prayers set a peaceful and celebratory tone for the rest of the day, which will see families coming together for traditional festive feasts, sharing meals, and distributing sacrificial meat. The grand gatherings at Delhi’s historic mosques stand as a testament to the city's rich cultural fabric and enduring spirit of communal harmony. As celebrations continue through the evening, the message of selflessness, charity, and togetherness remains at the heart of this year's Eid al-Adha festivities.
