The Delhi High Court has set aside an order of the Central Information Commission (CIC) that had directed Delhi University to share details of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s academic qualifications. With this ruling, the Prime Minister’s bachelor’s degree records will remain confidential.
The case stemmed from petitions filed under the Right to Information Act seeking disclosure of Modi’s educational documents. The CIC had earlier instructed the university to make the records public, but the decision was challenged in court.
The High Court observed that academic certificates fall under personal information and cannot be disclosed unless there is a larger public interest involved. The bench noted that privacy provisions under the RTI Act protect such records from being made public without sufficient justification.
The judgment has reignited the political debate, with opposition parties questioning the government’s stand on transparency, while supporters argue the ruling upholds the individual right to privacy.
With the court’s intervention, the matter of Modi’s academic background, which has often been raised in political circles, is likely to remain closed to public scrutiny unless challenged further.
